Use of Designations
The three requirements for renewing an IBF designation are as follows:
[1] Recertification Application
A recertification application must be completed to renew a designation. Along with contact and demographic information, an important part of the form is acknowledgement of voluntary adherence to terms and conditions of IBF certification. The renewal process involves completing a statement disclosing any investigations or legal proceedings relating to professional or business designee conduct. IBF monitors designees’ ongoing compliance with its ethical standards in addition to investigating consumer complaints, reviewing reports from other regulatory bodies and searching FINRA's Central Registration Depository system.
If it appears a designee violated IBF's Code of Ethics or Standards of Practice, IBF has the right to investigate the alleged behavior according to the Disciplinary Rules and Procedures. If a violation of the Code of Ethics or Standards of Practice is found, IBF may impose disciplinary action ranging from a private letter of censure or public admonition to suspension or revocation of the right to use IBF designation marks. IBF reserves the right to verify the accuracy of the completed statement and conducts audits to ensure disclosure compliance.
[2] Certification Fee
As part of the renewal requirements, IBF designees pay a recertification fee, currently set at $100 annually. A late fee of $25 is incurred if the certification requirements are not fulfilled by renewal date. To avoid the late fee, IBF must receive a completed renewal application and payment of fee(s) by renewal date (annually); the CE requirement must be fulfilled every two years. All fees are nonrefundable.
The nonrefundable recertification fee, in conjunction with other sources of revenue including exam fees, supports IBF operations. Some of these activities include protection of the IBF designation marks, enforcement of IBF’s Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice, educating the public about IBF marks plus development and administration of IBF materials. IBF’s acceptance of a fee payment does not guarantee or imply an individual's designation will be renewed. All renewal requirements must be completed to renew IBF designations.
[3] Continuing Education (CE)
The CE requirement is effective immediately upon earning a designation. CE hours for new designees are due two years after completion of an IBF designation. All reported CE hours must be processed by IBF on or before the expiration date of the current CE period to avoid certification expiration.
